Reviews

AudioFile Magazine...
[Editor's Note: The following is a combined review with BUB, OR THE VERY BEST THING.]--These two read-alongs would be wonderful additions to any family collection for bedtime reading and listening--either on the road or at home in bed. Both stories are gentle, soft, and calming, with satisfying endings, giving children the space to slow down, relax, and let sleep take over. BUB, OR THE VERY BEST THING is a charming story for very young listeners, read slowly, so there is enough time to enjoy the illustrations. When the King and Queen can't decide what is best for the prince, they wander around the castle asking various members of the household. The repetition of the story is contrasted by the different ending on each page, each done by a wonderfully different but totally appropriate voice. And the prince's answer, in a perfect voice, is "love." With a pleasing musical accompaniment, this is a great choice for a discussion, or a goodnight kiss! POSSUM MAGIC is another treat for young children, with wonderful music and lovely watercolor illustrations. Narrated by the author, this read-along is also performed slowly enough to allow the listener to enjoy its delicate, soft illustrations, and read along with the text. Mem Fox's lovely Australian accent and her obvious affection for her characters bring this story to life. W.L.S. (c) AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine
